Summary
Spring Framework is vulnerable to a path traversal issue due to a lack of sufficient sanitization of path sequences processed by the WebMvc.fn or WebFlux.fn functional web frameworks.
A remote attacker could submit crafted HTTP requests to an application that serves static resources through the affected frameworks in order to read any file on the system that is accessible to the process in which the Spring application is running.
An application is vulnerable when both of the following are true:
- the web application uses RouterFunctions to serve static resources, and
- resource handling is explicitly configured with a FileSystemResource location
The vendor has noted in the official advisory that malicious requests are blocked and rejected when the Spring Security HTTP Firewall is in use.
