Subject:    Conversion of Deprecated PTDB Tablespaces to UTS

Effective:  May 2023

Dear Customers,

Many of you reached out to us recently and asked us for assistance with conversion of deprecated PTDB tablespaces to Universal Table Spaces (UTS) in your Broadcom Db2 Tools environment. We always appreciate the opportunity to provide you with best-quality software and services, and today, we are pleased to announce the availability of the following feature PTFs (LU09808 through LU09819):

PTDB UTS CONVERSION

The feature PTFs include a series of steps to help you convert single-table and multi-table non-UTS into partition-by-growth (PBG) UTS. UTS tablespaces enable you to use new features and functions in Db2 that are not supported in non-UTS tablespaces.

Before you start with the conversion, we ask you to carefully read the HOLDDATA to understand the requirements and avoid unnecessary downtime. For your convenience, here are some key takeaways:

  • The conversion process is fully integrated with the existing infrastructure for applying schema changes - compare and create tasks.
  • The conversion method for multi-table segmented tablespaces depends on the currently activated Db2 function level. We recommend activating V12R1M508, so that the conversion will use ALTER TABLESPACE MOVE TABLE command, followed by a SHRLEVEL CHANGE REORG (online migration). If your site has a function level below V12R1M508, the conversion will use UNLOAD/DROP/CREATE/LOAD (offline migration).
  • The single-table segmented tablespaces are always converted with online migration.
  • Online migration ensures uninterrupted availability of the products. However, we ensured that even offline migration does not affect Detector (PDT), Subsystem Analyzer (PSA), SYSVIEW for Db2 (IDB2), and their data collectors.

Requirements:

  • Extended Addressability (EA) must be enabled for PTDB objects, or you need to set a proper SMS ACS configuration. For a workaround, see details in the HOLDDATA.
  • Ensure that your products are current on maintenance and you applied all prior schema changes to the Database Management Solutions for Db2 for z/OS database (PTDB).
  • These PTFs modify JCL statements for tasks ssid0000 (Compare Db2 Objects) and ssid0001 (Create Required Db2 Objects). To generate new jobs for these tasks, use the Post-Install Tailoring panels.

Recommendations:

  • Ensure that the UNLOAD data sets for offline conversion reside on persistent volumes.
  • Remove data that you no longer need from the product tables.
  • Run RUNSTATS by executing the task ssidSTAT (Determine Db2 Object Sizes).

To complete the conversion, run the task ssid0001 (Create Required Db2 Objects). After the conversion, you must rebind all plans and packages that are required to execute the Database Management Solutions for Db2.
