Securityfocus: BID 104198 / NVD: CVE-2018-5236 Race Condition |
Description: |
Symantec Endpoint Protection Windows endpoint may be susceptible to a race condition (or race hazard). This type of issue occurs in software where the output is dependent on the sequence or timing of other uncontrollable events. When this kind of bug exists in some code paths, a security vulnerability can occur. |

Securityfocus: BID 104199 / NVD: CVE-2018-5237 Privilege Escalation |
Description: |
Symantec Endpoint Protection Windows endpoint may be susceptible to a privilege escalation vulnerability, which is a type of issue that allows a user to gain elevated access to resources that are normally protected at lower access levels. |
MITIGATION
The aforementioned issues were validated by product team engineers. A set of Symantec Endpoint Protection updates, Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 14 RU1 MP1 and later or 12.1 RU6 MP10 and later, have been made available. Note that the latest releases of the aforementioned products are available to customers through normal support channels or via FileConnect. At this time, Symantec is not aware of any exploitations or adverse customer impact from these issues.
Symantec recommends the following measures to reduce risk of attack:
- Restrict access to administrative or management systems to authorized privileged users.
- Restrict remote access to trusted/authorized systems only.
- Run under the principle of least privilege, where possible, to limit the impact of potential exploit.
- Keep all operating systems and applications current with vendor patches.
- Follow a multi-layered approach to security. At a minimum, run both firewall and anti-malware applications to provide multiple points of detection and protection to both inbound and outbound threats.
- Deploy network and host-based intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for signs of anomalous or suspicious activity. This may aid in the detection of attacks or malicious activity related to the exploitation of latent vulnerabilities.
