MITIGATION
Details
Symantec was informed of multiple SQL injection issues in the software packaging and deployment application, Altiris WISE Package Studio 8.0, which could allow a malicious user with authorized access to execute arbitrary sql queries on the backend database of the system.
In a normal installation, the WISE Package Studio is restricted to administrator-level access and should not be accessible external to the network environment. To attempt to take advantage of these issues, a non-privileged network user would need to be granted authorized, or gain unauthorized, access to the application. An external attacker would need to entice a network user with authorized access to run arbitrary sql queries of the attacker’s choice.
A successful exploitation of these issues could potentially allow data disclosure/modification or deletion or possibly compromise the underlying database system with privileges of the logged-in user.
Symantec Response
Symantec engineers verified these issues on the supported product version. A product update is available to address these issues. Symantec recommends users apply the update, 8.0MR1, to Altiris WISE Package Studio version 8.0. Customers may also work through their normal support channels for information on migrating to Admin Studio for Symantec.
Altiris WISE Package Studio 8.0MR1 is available through the FileConnect -Electronic Software Distribution web site, https://fileconnect.symantec.com/.
Best Practices
As a part of normal best practices, Symantec strongly recommends:
- Restrict access to administration or management systems to privileged users
- Restrict remote access, if required, to trusted/authorized systems only
- Run under the principle of least privilege where possible to limit the impact of exploit by threats
- Keep all operating systems and applications updated with the latest vendor patches
- Follow a multi-layered approach to security. Run both firewall and anti-malware applications, at a minimum, to provide multiple points of detection and protection to both inbound and outbound threats
- Deploy network and host-based intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for signs of anomalous or suspicious activity. This may aid in detection of attacks or malicious activity related to exploitation of latent vulnerabilities
