SUMMARY
Symantec’s IM Manager administration console is susceptible to multiple SQL injection issues which could result in a compromise of the Symantec IM Manager database by an authorized but unprivileged network user.

MITIGATION
Details
Symantec was notified of multiple SQL injection issues present in Symantec IM Manager administration console. The console fails to properly filter/validate user input. In normal installations, the console is not reachable from outside the network. An authorized but unprivileged network user who could successfully exploit any of these issues could potentially gain unauthorized elevated access to the targeted system and/or compromise data on the server.
Symantec Response
Symantec engineers have verified these issues and released updates to address them. Symantec engineers did additional reviews of related functionality to further enhance the overall security of Symantec IM Manager.
Symantec is not aware of any exploitation of, or adverse customer impact from these issues
Symantec recommends all customers upgrade to Symantec IM Manager - 8.4.16, available through the FileConnect -Electronic Software Distribution web site.
Best Practices
As part of normal best practices, Symantec strongly recommends:
- Restrict access to administration or management systems to privileged users.
- Disable remote access or restrict it to trusted/authorized systems only.
- Keep all operating systems and applications updated with the latest vendor patches.
- Follow a multi-layered approach to security. Run both firewall and anti-malware applications, at a minimum, to provide multiple points of detection and protection to both inbound and outbound threats.
- Deploy network and host-based intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for signs of anomalous or suspicious activity. This may aid in detection of attacks or malicious activity related to exploitation of latent vulnerabilities
